The bet attracted Gulf capital early. Saudi Telecom's STC co-led a $350M round in December 2016 that put Careem's valuation over $1 billion, and Kingdom Holding and Daimler led a $150M close in June 2017. Careem passed 80 cities, doubled in Egypt and Pakistan, and diversified into food and package delivery, bus services, and credit transfers.

In October 2018 Careem raised another $200M at a reported valuation near $2 billion. Five months later Uber agreed to buy it for $3.1 billion — $1.4B in cash plus $1.7B in convertible notes — the largest technology deal in the Middle East, eclipsing Amazon's $580M purchase of Souq.

The deal closed in January 2020 with Careem kept as an independent brand under Uber. At exit the business covered 120 cities in 15 countries from Morocco to Pakistan, and the brand has since grown into a super app with food, groceries, and payments.

In June 2026 Uber agreed to buy back a 12.5% stake in Careem Technologies from e& for $100M, cutting e& to 37.53%, pending regulatory approvals. Co-founder Mudassir Sheikha still leads the company.
