Flutterwave took its one-API payments bet from Lagos to a $3B valuation and the Gulf

Nigeria's Flutterwave bet a single API plus local licenses could be Africa's payments rail, then followed customers into Saudi, Bahrain, and Dubai.

做的是什么生意

Cross-border payment infrastructure: one API and local licenses let businesses in and out of Africa collect, hold, and send money across 34+ countries.

启动资金Total raised $475M by Feb 2022: $20M Series A (2018), $35M Series B (2020), $170M Series C at $1B (2021), $250M Series D at $3B+ (2022).

起因

Founded in 2016 by Olugbenga Agboola, Flutterwave processed 140 million transactions worth over $9 billion by its 2021 unicorn round, with clients including Booking.com, Flywire, and Uber. Agboola's stated goal was to become 'the infrastructure for any kind of payments' across Africa, then emerging markets.

经过

A $250M Series D in February 2022 tripled its valuation to over $3 billion, making it Africa's highest-valued startup, with 900,000 businesses, 150 currencies, and 200 million transactions worth $16 billion. In 2024 it entered Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Turkey to support a long-standing ride-hailing customer, added licenses in Ghana, Uganda, and Egypt, and launched Send App for remittances; enterprise payments contribute 90% of revenue.

结果

Still scaling. By 2025 it had technology reach in 34+ African countries, a second TIME100 listing, and a growing Dubai team preparing a UAE push — betting the Gulf-Africa remittance corridor is the next growth market.

背景

Flutterwave was founded in 2016 by Olugbenga Agboola to solve a classic African problem: cross-border payments were fragmented, expensive, and hard to integrate. Its bet was that a single API plus locally licensed rails in every market could become the payments infrastructure for the continent — used by both African businesses and global companies like Booking.com and Uber.

The model scaled fast. By its $170M Series C in March 2021 it was a unicorn processing 140 million transactions worth over $9 billion; a $250M Series D in February 2022 tripled its valuation to over $3 billion, making it Africa's highest-valued startup, with 900,000 businesses on the platform and 200 million transactions worth $16 billion.

In 2024 Flutterwave turned to the Gulf, entering Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Turkey to support the payment needs of one of its longest-standing customers, a ride-hailing giant. It added licenses in Ghana, Uganda, and Egypt, kept an Egypt operation, and launched Send App for remittances — while enterprise payments contributed 90% of revenue.

By 2025 the company had technology reach in 34+ African countries, a growing team in Dubai, and plans to deepen its MENA footprint through the UAE — chasing a Gulf-Africa remittance corridor where transfers cost 8-9% and roughly a third of Africa's $109 billion in 2024 remittances originated.

这件事要成立,得有什么

  • One API plus local licenses made cross-border payments simple enough for both African SMBs and global enterprises.
  • Following a ride-hailing customer into Saudi, Bahrain, and Turkey gave the Gulf expansion pre-proven demand.
  • Enterprise payments, 90% of revenue, funded consumer bets like Send App and the UAE build-out.
  • The Gulf-Africa remittance corridor — 8-9% transfer costs and heavy cash usage — is a structural market waiting to be digitized.

可借鉴之处

Follow the customer: Flutterwave's Gulf entry came from serving one ride-hailing giant across new markets, so expansion cost little and had demand pre-proven.

后续进展

As of August 2026 Flutterwave remains a private, scaling fintech: a two-time TIME100 honoree with technology reach in 34+ African countries, US remittance licenses, and a growing Dubai team focused on MENA. No UAE launch date has been announced, but the company's own blog says deepening its UAE presence is central to becoming a 'truly global payments company.' The Gulf push has not stalled publicly, and Flutterwave says it will also weigh funding or acquisitions to support sustainable growth.
