FERC Order 881, issued in December 2021, required transmission owners to compute hourly ambient-adjusted ratings based on forecast weather instead of static seasonal ratings, with full compliance due July 12, 2025. LineVision, a Somerville, Massachusetts startup led by CEO Hudson Gilmer, had spent years selling dynamic line rating (DLR) sensors; the order turned its pitch from an efficiency option into a compliance project for every utility.

The market followed the rulebook: utilities began pairing AAR compliance with DLR pilots, and LineVision's October 2022 Series C ($33M, led by S2G Ventures with Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund, Clean Energy Ventures and National Grid Partners) funded the push. By 2025 the company was on Duquesne Light's network in Pittsburgh — a third expansion tied to a $19.7M DOE grid-modernization grant — and on National Grid's UK network, where sensors on 275 km of circuits were projected to unlock power for 75,000 homes and save about £20M a year in constraint costs.

Still live and scaling as of mid-2025: DLR deployments grew across US utilities and National Grid UK, with reported capacity increases of 25–40% on instrumented lines and the July 2025 AAR compliance deadline still pulling utilities into the market.
