Matternet builds and operates urban drone delivery systems — the M2 aircraft, landing stations and fleet software — flying medical, retail and restaurant payloads directly or through logistics partners like UPS.
起因
Andreas Raptopoulos founded Matternet in December 2011 after studying how drones could deliver goods where roads failed; early missions with Médecins Sans Frontières in Papua New Guinea and WHO in Bhutan tested the concept. Swiss Post commercial partnerships followed, and in 2017 the two launched the world's first commercial BVLOS drone delivery over a city, moving lab samples between hospitals in Lugano, Switzerland.

In 2019 UPS and Matternet won the FAA's first full Part 135 certification for a drone airline, starting hospital-campus lab flights at WakeMed in North Carolina. In 2022 the FAA issued the M2 the first standard Type Certificate and Production Certificate for a delivery drone, a moat no competitor held; Matternet then expanded into US consumer delivery in Silicon Valley in 2024.
