业务是什么
Telemedicine platform for video doctor consultations, lab tests, medicine delivery and surgicare, serving a customer base of over 30 million.
The bet
Buying Aetna's vHealth book - team, brand and ~1.4M subscriptions - makes MediBuddy a B2B healthcare player fast enough to hit ~30% of topline by FY24.
启动资金
All-cash multi-million-dollar deal, amount undisclosed, funded through internal accruals (announced 2023-02-09).
如何开始
MediBuddy, founded in 2015 by Satish Kannan and Enbasekar Dinadayalane, offered video consultations, lab-test booking, medicine orders and surgicare. It had already acquired DocsApp in 2020 and rural-focused Clinix in 2022. vHealth began in 2008 under Indian Health Organisation (IHO) Pvt Ltd and was bought by Aetna International in 2011.
发生了什么
On February 9, 2023 MediBuddy said it had acquired the Indian business of US-based Aetna Inc, vHealth by Aetna, with rebranding to 'MediBuddy vHealth' over six months. The entire 180-member vHealth team moves under MediBuddy, continuing under Anurag Khosla, CEO of Aetna India and IHO, and vHealth's subscribers transfer to MediBuddy's platform of over 30 million customers. Kannan said vHealth would contribute roughly 30% of MediBuddy's topline by FY24 and that the startup was 'in talks to acquire more companies'.
成立的前提
vHealth gave MediBuddy an operating B2B book - about 1.4 million subscriptions, a 180-member team and BFSI relationships that organic growth would take years to build.
With FY22 net loss up 142% to INR 249.2 Cr, buying an income stream expected to reach ~30% of topline was a way to buy scale while promising EBITDA positivity in two years.
The acquisition deepens reach in the BFSI sector and Tier II cities, segments where MediBuddy's consumer-first telemedicine had less traction.
It continued a tried playbook: DocsApp in 2020, Clinix in 2022, now Aetna's India business - with 'more companies' in talks.
可以借鉴什么
Buying an established B2B book - team, subscribers and channel relationships intact - is faster than building enterprise healthcare distribution organically.
后续
The vHealth business was to transition and be rebranded 'MediBuddy vHealth' over the following six months, with subscribers moved onto MediBuddy's platform. MediBuddy was still privately held, having raised over $200 million across rounds, and was telling investors it expected EBITDA positivity within two years.
