做的是什么生意

An online marketplace where small sellers and resellers reach India's price-first shoppers, earning money from logistics, ads and services rather than seller commissions.

起因

Founded in 2015, Meesho began as a social-commerce platform: resellers shared product catalogs with friends and family over WhatsApp, targeting Indians shopping online for the first time. It evolved into a full marketplace whose commission-light model let small merchants sell cheaply, putting pressure on Amazon and Flipkart.

经过

For the six months ended September 30, 2025, Meesho reported operating revenue of ₹55.78 billion (about $624 million), net merchandise value up 44% year over year to ₹191.94 billion, and 234 million transacting users with more than 700,000 sellers over the trailing year. It remained loss-making, with a restated pre-tax loss of ₹4.33 billion for the half, widened from ₹0.24 billion a year earlier, as it reinvested in marketing and logistics rather than charging sellers commissions.

结果

Meesho priced its IPO at ₹105–111 per share in early December 2025, raised about $604 million after 79.2x subscription, and listed on December 10 at ₹161.20 on the BSE — a 45% premium — with the stock touching ₹171.84 on the NSE and valuing the company at about ₹770 billion ($8.6 billion). SoftBank, Prosus and Fidelity sold nothing; Elevation, Peak XV and Y Combinator trimmed small stakes.

背景

Meesho was founded in 2015 as a social-commerce experiment: resellers — many of them first-time entrepreneurs — forwarded product catalogs to friends and family over WhatsApp, giving Indians shopping online for the first time a trusted middleman. From that wedge it grew into a full marketplace with a commission-light model, charging sellers for logistics, ads and services rather than taking a cut of every sale.

The model compounded into a giant of value e-commerce: for the six months ended September 30, 2025, Meesho reported operating revenue of ₹55.78 billion (about $624 million), net merchandise value up 44% year over year to ₹191.94 billion, 234 million transacting users and more than 700,000 sellers in the trailing year, plus over 50,000 content creators driving discovery. It was still loss-making — a restated ₹4.33 billion pre-tax loss versus ₹0.24 billion a year earlier — because it kept spending on marketing and logistics instead of squeezing sellers.

In early December 2025 Meesho priced its IPO at ₹105–111 per share, deliberately below earlier $7–8 billion valuation talk, and drew 79.2x subscription with bids worth about $28 billion. It listed on December 10 at ₹161.20 on the BSE, a 45% premium, touched ₹171.84 on the NSE, and ended the day valued at about ₹770 billion ($8.6 billion) — the first major horizontal e-commerce listing out of India, with SoftBank, Prosus and Fidelity holding all their shares.

这件事要成立,得有什么

  • Amazon and Flipkart optimized for convenience and selection; Meesho went after price-first buyers and small merchants, a different and much larger slice of India.
  • Earning from logistics, ads and services instead of commissions kept seller costs low, compounding into 234 million transacting users and 700,000+ sellers.
  • The founders priced the IPO below their earlier $7–8 billion target to attract long-term holders; 79x subscription and a 45% listing gain validated the choice.
  • The half-year loss widened to ₹4.33 billion, so the listing funds the marketing spend — the zero-commission bet is still being tested in public.

可借鉴之处

A zero-commission model can win price-first shoppers on logistics and ad fees; a low IPO band leaves upside for new holders, but widening losses mean the market is still funding the bet.

后续进展

As of December 10, 2025, Meesho is public on the BSE and NSE, valued at about ₹770 billion ($8.6 billion) after a debut that made it India's first major horizontal e-commerce listing. The fresh issue raised about ₹42.50 billion ($475 million); SoftBank, Prosus and Fidelity sold no shares while Elevation, Peak XV and Y Combinator trimmed holdings. With 234 million transacting users and 700,000 sellers, Meesho keeps expanding its creator network and value-focused categories; its next test is whether the widened losses narrow as fresh capital pays for marketing and logistics.
