业务是什么
A Raleigh, North Carolina coding bootcamp that trained career-changers and placed them into tech jobs.
The bet
The entry-level coding job was structurally going away, not cyclically — a bootcamp selling exactly that first job had no reason to wait out the cycle.
如何开始
Momentum Learning opened in North Carolina's Triangle region as a coding bootcamp. Over six years it placed more than 400 graduates into jobs at 120 different companies.
发生了什么
When tech hiring slumped in 2023, co-founder Jessica Mitsch Homes said the bootcamp was prepared for a normal downturn: 'The tide rolls in and rolls out. That is not a reason to close your business.' But from 2023 on, companies — from venture-backed startups to public firms she kept tabs on — told her they had stopped hiring because AI programs automated the entry-level work their juniors used to do. By the end of 2023, she said, 'the tune had totally changed': the entry-level job was 'really starting to go away because it can be automated. These AI tools got good so fast.'
最终结果
In late March 2024, after a six-year run, Momentum Learning announced it was permanently shutting its doors. Homes cited lagging worker demand and generative AI's influence on entry-level coding jobs — the exact job its graduates were trained to fill.
成立的前提
It is a clean documented case of a business ending itself over a structural read of AI, not a cyclical one — the founder explicitly separated the two.
The trigger comes from the demand side in her own words: employers said out loud that AI had automated the junior work.
It captures the bootcamp model's hidden dependency: placement into the entry-level job is the product, so the product dies with the job.
可以借鉴什么
When your product is a bridge into a specific job, watch the job, not the market cycle: an ordinary downturn is weather, but automation of the destination itself is a reason to close.

As of the March 31, 2024 announcement, Momentum Learning was permanently closed after six years and 400-plus placements. Axios framed the closure against a wider backdrop it cited: tech job postings shrinking as AI spread, and entry-level tech hiring drying up industry-wide.
