起因

In 2024 Frank Hutter — a University of Freiburg professor and leading AutoML researcher — co-founded Prior Labs with Noah Hollmann and Sauraj Gambhir. Their starting point was TabPFN research from Hutter's group: a transformer that treats tables the way LLMs treat text, making predictions from tabular data in seconds without training a bespoke pipeline for each problem. In February 2025 the company announced a €9M pre-seed led by Balderton Capital and XTX Ventures.

经过

Prior Labs stayed research-led and open-source: its TabPFN model series was published in Nature, downloads passed 3 million, and TabPFN-2.6 ranked first on TabArena, the public benchmark for tabular foundation models. SAP had been working on its own enterprise relational foundation model, and on 4 May 2026 announced a definitive agreement to acquire Prior Labs outright, with the purchase price undisclosed.

结果

The acquisition closed on 17 July 2026: Prior Labs remains an independent unit under its three co-founders, keeping its brand and open research, while SAP committed more than €1 billion through 2030 to build it into a frontier AI lab for structured business data — an exit roughly 18 months after the €9M pre-seed.
