Sage Geosystems was founded in Houston in 2020 by oil and gas veterans; Cindy Taff, a 30-year Shell engineer, joined as co-founder and CEO. The founding wager was that the industry's drilling and stimulation toolkit could be aimed at hot dry rock, making geothermal power buildable far beyond the rare 'unicorn geology' of traditional fields. The company tested its approach at an abandoned gas well near San Isidro, Texas, in 2023.

In February 2024 Sage raised a $17M round led by Chesapeake Energy. On August 13, 2024 it unveiled a geopressured storage facility at San Miguel Electric Cooperative's coal-plant site in Christine, Texas — billed as the world's first geopressured geothermal energy storage installation, able to discharge 3 MW for 6–10 hours. Two weeks later Sage announced a PPA to supply Meta up to 150 MW of geothermal baseload power east of the Rockies, with the first phase targeted for 2027. In January 2026 it closed a >$97M Series B co-led by Ormat Technologies and Carbon Direct Capital to deploy its first commercial Pressure Geothermal power plant at an existing Ormat facility in Nevada.

Pilot proven, scaling: Sage's 3 MW SMECI plant near San Antonio has been producing power since April 2026, with more than 120 days of grid-connected operation by August 2026 — the third next-generation geothermal system on the US grid — and Sage reports water loss under 10% in tests. The company has about a gigawatt of projects lined up on paper.
