Co-founders Cara Borenstein and Theo Marin met studying computer science at Columbia and later worked at Twilio and Nextdoor. They set out to build a better team wiki, concluded the wiki problem is a people problem rather than a technology problem, and decided the personal notepad is how developers like them actually get work done. Stashpad took part in Techstars in 2021, launched its desktop notepad in August 2022 and its iOS app in January 2023, and positioned itself against Notion, Evernote and Obsidian as a purpose-built tool for working memory rather than long-term knowledge management.

While building multiplayer features they interviewed engineering teams and found that even teams with an official wiki in Confluence or Notion kept falling back to Google Docs. So Stashpad launched Stashpad Docs — no login required, Markdown formatting, browser-first, with document history stored locally and search that does not query the server; sharing and real-time collaboration (claimed at under 50 ms of delay) are included, while read-only sharing, restricted access and priority support sit behind a Pro plan at $12 per month or $8 per month billed annually. The original app continued as Stashpad Lists.
