Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, childhood friends who studied CS together at MIT, founded Exafunction in June 2021 as a GPU optimization and virtualization platform that was profitable. Seeing generative AI arrive, they killed the profitable business and in 2022 renamed to Codeium to ship a free AI autocomplete extension; it collected millions of individual users while revenue stayed modest at around $12M ARR by late 2024. On 2024-11-13 Codeium launched Windsurf Editor, calling it the 'first agentic IDE' with Cascade for multi-step AI reasoning and codebase awareness. Word of mouth did the rest: within 4 months about 1 million developers were using it and ARR grew roughly 8x from $12M to $100M (late 2024 to April 2025); the company rebranded from Codeium to Windsurf in April 2025. Success drew predators: Anthropic cut Windsurf's direct access to Claude models in June 2025 over rumors of an OpenAI acquisition, pushing customers toward Cursor, and OpenAI's reported $3B offer expired in July 2025.

In July 2025 Google paid $2.4B to license Windsurf's technology and hired CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen and key researchers into Google DeepMind; days later Cognition — maker of Devin — signed a definitive agreement to acquire Windsurf's IP, product and the roughly 200 employees Google had not hired, at a stated $82M ARR. Windsurf's interim CEO Jeff Wang called the final 72 hours 'the wildest rollercoaster ride of my career'; per The Information, staff who joined in the past year received nothing from Google's deal, prompting social-media backlash, and Cognition promised all remaining employees would share in its deal.
