What the business is
Sells a $119 USB-C keypad for Macs whose three keys remap to whatever app is in front, plus a marketplace of community-written AI-agent skills.
The bet
People will pay for a physical context layer for AI agents — and a $119 keypad that proves it is worth more to investors than a pitch deck.
Starting capital
$5.5M seed, July 2026, co-led by Redstart Labs (Info Edge Ventures) and 360 ONE Asset
How it started
Apoorv Shankar sold his AI-wearable startup LazyCo to Ultrahuman in 2022 and spent three years building its hardware operation. In 2025 he founded Aina across Bengaluru and San Francisco — about 35 people and a Bengaluru factory — to build a context-aware interface for the agent era. Dune was the deliberate small experiment before any flagship device.
What happened
Aina showed three prototype interfaces at CES 2026, then launched Dune in April. It took #1 Product of the Day and #1 of the Week on Product Hunt (632 votes), placed #4 on a June 1 relaunch, and drew hands-on reviews from Forbes and TechCrunch, which priced the intro unit at $119 heading to $149. In July the company emerged from stealth with a $5.5M seed to launch its flagship AI-native interface.
What has to be true
The AI-hardware race (OpenAI, Meta, Rabbit, Humane) is fighting over new device categories; a $119 keypad lets customers buy into the thesis for the price of a keyboard accessory.
Context is Dune's real product: knowing the foreground app lets three keys carry that app's three most-used actions, which software-only launchers must infer.
The launch validated the wedge — meetings and pull requests are universal annoyances — before the company committed capital to a flagship device.
A skills marketplace plus Claude's MCP turns a one-time hardware sale into a retention surface — a platform, not a Stream Deck rival.
What can be applied
Probe a big hardware bet with a cheap gadget that fixes one annoying thing first. Dune won the launch on mute and merge keys, and the launch itself became the seed-round story.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Dune is shipping from a Bengaluru factory at $119 (rising to $149 after the intro window), with left- and right-hand models matched to specific MacBook builds and a USB-C adapter for older Macs. The Dune Marketplace carries community scripts and agentic workflows, and Build with Claude lets users describe shortcuts in plain language. Aina is spending its $5.5M seed expanding engineering in Bengaluru and San Francisco toward the flagship context-aware interface Dune was built to de-risk.
