Articulate makes software — Articulate 360 for enterprises and Rise.com for smaller businesses — that companies use to build and deliver online training for compliance, sales and soft skills.

Bet that after 19 years of organic growth, taking $1.5B from strategic investors instead of going public would fund expansion fast enough for COVID-driven demand.

$1.5B round (July 2021, its first-ever outside funding), led by General Atlantic with Blackstone Growth and ICONIQ Growth, at a $3.75B valuation

Adam Schwartz founded Articulate in 2002 and grew it for 19 years without taking outside capital, building software companies used to create and deliver online training.

As remote work spread during the pandemic and companies leaned harder on digital training, Schwartz decided the moment called for outside capital rather than continuing to bootstrap. In July 2021 Articulate closed a $1.5B round led by General Atlantic, with Blackstone Growth and ICONIQ Growth participating, valuing the company at $3.75B. Articulate called it a Series A even though the company was 19 years old, since it was literally the first funding round it had ever taken; Schwartz said he could have funded growth by going public instead but preferred strategic investor relationships.

Nineteen years of organic growth gave Articulate leverage most startups raising a first round don't have: real revenue, scale, and no pressure to raise.

COVID-driven remote work and a shift toward digital, self-paced training created a macro tailwind that both Schwartz and lead investor General Atlantic cited as the reason to move now.

Choosing a large private round over an IPO let Articulate access growth capital while picking investors for strategic fit rather than public-market liquidity.

A company can wait nearly two decades to take its first funding round — timing that first raise to a macro demand shift can justify a valuation most startups never reach organically.

As of July 2021, Articulate had just closed its first-ever funding round, was valued at $3.75B, and reported more than 106,000 customers in 161 countries including every Fortune 100 company; the company does not disclose financial figures beyond the round itself.
