What the business is

An astrology platform whose core product is now AI astrologers: instant voice and chat consultations in major Indian languages, built on the kundli and horoscope data from AstroSage's 2004-era web service.

Starting capitalBootstrapped: zero outside funding and profitable every year since inception, per company statements carried by ET Edge Insights (Feb 2026).

How it started

AstroSage shipped one of India's earliest consumer mobile apps, Mobile Kundli, on Palm handhelds in 2001, moved astrology to the cloud in 2004, and launched Bhrigoo.ai in 2018, years before ChatGPT made AI mainstream. In August 2024 the company launched AI astrologers inside the app, betting that LLM-generated consultations could replace human ones at a fraction of the cost.

What happened

AI revenue grew about 20% month-on-month for 18 consecutive months after the August 2024 launch. In October 2025 AstroSage launched the 'AI Astrologer on Phone Call' in Hindi, English, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Tamil. By February 2026 the company reported 25 crore+ questions answered by AI astrologers, with user ratings for AI (4.6) higher than for human astrologers (4.3) on the same platform, an 80%+ share in kundli creation and horoscope matching, and near-90% margins on AI consultations versus the 45-55% typical of astrology service marketplaces.

How it ended up

Still running and expanding: the company says it is developing autonomous AI astrologers that manage their own phone numbers and accounts, and plans launches in France, Germany, Japan and Brazil; it remains profitable with no outside funding.

Background

AstroSage AI is an Indian astrology platform that in August 2024 bet that users would pay an AI astrologer instead of a human one. The bet worked: the company reports 80M+ cumulative downloads, 1.5M daily active users, 25 crore+ (250M) AI questions answered, and AI revenue growing about 20% month-on-month for 18 straight months, making it the No. 1 astrology app on Google Play India.

The company was not AI-native. It shipped Mobile Kundli on Palm handhelds in 2001, moved astrology to the cloud in 2004, and launched Bhrigoo.ai in 2018 - years before ChatGPT. The August 2024 AI astrologer launch added instant chat and voice consultations in Hindi, English, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Tamil, turning a services marketplace into something closer to software.

The economics are the point. Traditional astrology platforms run service marketplaces at 45-55% margins; AstroSage says its in-house AI astrologers run at nearly 90% margins, with user ratings of 4.6 versus 4.3 for human astrologers on the same platform. The company has never raised outside capital and says it has been profitable every year since inception.

Competition and risk remain: Astrotalk, a human-astrologer marketplace, grew operating revenue from $78M (FY24) to $140M (FY25), and analysts warn that AI astrologers can cross from comfort into decision-making advice on marriage, money and health. AstroSage is betting the next step is autonomous AI astrologers and international launches in France, Germany, Japan and Brazil.

What has to be true

  • AstroSage proved the demand curve for AI consultations in a faith-heavy market: 25 crore questions answered and 20% MoM revenue growth for 18 months.
  • The 90%-vs-45-55% margin comparison shows why an AI bet changes a services marketplace into a software business.
  • Twenty years of proprietary birth-chart data and brand installed base gave a 2004-era company an advantage AI-native startups could not buy.
  • The product deliberately leaned into AI rather than hiding it, publishing higher user ratings for AI astrologers than human ones to build trust.

What can be applied

An old content company can beat AI-native startups by grafting LLMs onto an existing user base and proprietary dataset - and the margin structure, not the model, is what makes the bet durable.

Aftermath

As of July 2026 AstroSage AI remains the top astrology app on Google Play India by its own reporting, still bootstrapped and profitable. The roadmap includes autonomous AI astrologers that hold their own phone numbers and accounts, voice AI in more Indian languages, and launches in France, Germany, Japan and Brazil. The wider market is heating up: TMTPost cites estimates that India's astrology-app market could grow from roughly $163M (2024) toward $1.8B (2030), with Astrotalk leading the human-marketplace model and 900+ faith-tech startups in India.
