Crafto's Bharat bet: AI greetings app tops India's art & design chart for Primetrace

Primetrace's Crafto AI turns personalized greetings and statuses into India's most-used art & design app, behind a 70M-MAU house of apps.

Primetrace Technologies (Crafto AI)

The betThat vernacular users beyond India's big cities would pay for AI-personalized content like greetings and statuses instead of using English-first global tools.Scaling

What the business is

Primetrace is a Bengaluru consumer-AI company; Crafto AI is its app for creating personalized photo greetings, festival posts, statuses and video content in Indian languages, aimed at non-metro 'Bharat' users.

How it started

Four former Pratilipi employees — Abhishek Kejriwal, Vipul Allawadhi, Mohit Sharma and Naveen Dewangan — founded Primetrace in 2020 in Bengaluru to build a 'house of apps' for Bharat, India's vernacular non-metro market.

What happened

Flagship social app Kutumb grew from 0.5M MAU in December 2020 to 11M by March 2021; the company raised a $26M Series A in June 2021 from Tiger Global and Peak XV. Crafto AI became a key revenue app as users paid subscriptions for personalized content; by July 2026 Primetrace reported ~70M MAU, a ₹600 Cr ARR and ₹120–150 Cr annual profit, and was in advanced talks to raise $50M at a $500M valuation.

How it ended up

Still live and scaling: as of August 2026 Crafto is India's #1 art & design app by usage, and the parent is raising fresh capital to launch more consumer-AI products.

Background

Primetrace was founded in 2020 by four former Pratilipi employees — Abhishek Kejriwal, Vipul Allawadhi, Mohit Sharma and Naveen Dewangan — to build consumer apps for Bharat, the vernacular, non-metro India that English-first global products ignore.

Its house-of-apps strategy produced Kutumb, a regional-language community network, and Crafto AI, a content-creation app where users make personalized good-morning messages, festival greetings, statuses and short videos with their own photos. Subscriptions became the company's biggest revenue stream, driven by Crafto's paid personalized-content features.

Scale followed: Kutumb grew from 0.5M MAU in December 2020 to 11M by March 2021, and Primetrace raised a $26M Series A in June 2021 from Tiger Global and Peak XV. By July 2026 sources told Moneycontrol the company had ~70M MAU across apps, an annualized revenue run rate above ₹600 Cr (~$63M), and annual profits of ₹120–150 Cr.

The chart result is concrete: on August 30, 2026, Similarweb ranked Crafto #1 in usage among Google Play Art & Design apps in India, ahead of Canva and Adobe Express. The company was simultaneously in advanced talks to raise $50M at a $500M valuation to launch more consumer-AI apps.

What has to be true

  • The chart evidence is concrete and dated: #1 usage rank in India's Google Play Art & Design category on August 30, 2026.
  • The bet is sharp: vernacular users will pay for AI-personalized cultural content, not English-first generic tools.
  • The company has real business numbers from independent sources: ~70M MAU, ₹600 Cr ARR, ₹120–150 Cr profit.
  • It is a distinct company and event — no existing library entry covers Primetrace, Crafto or Kutumb.

What can be applied

Localizing the job, not just translating the UI, let a small Indian startup outrank global design giants in the category it targeted.

Aftermath

As of September 2, 2026, Primetrace continues to run Kutumb, Crafto AI and newer products including Polo, a dating and community platform. The $50M round at a reported $500M valuation was still in advanced talks as of the July 30, 2026 Moneycontrol report and had not been announced as closed by the as-of date. Crafto remains India's #1 art & design app by usage per Similarweb's August 30, 2026 ranking.
