Cohere builds enterprise LLMs and North, its secure agent workspace, deployable in the cloud, on premises or fully air-gapped.

That the scarce feature in enterprise agents is control — quotas, caps, audit and air-gapped deployment plus model portability — to compete with Copilot and Vertex.

Cohere announced North in January 2025 as a secure enterprise workspace positioned to challenge Microsoft Copilot and Google Vertex AI. Twenty-one months later the market had shifted from chat workspaces to autonomous agents — and to agents that spend real money — and North 2 reflects that shift.

North 2 adds user quotas, rate limits and organization-wide caps; a redesigned agent harness running multi-step processes with humans in the loop for designated decisions; reusable skills and shareable agents; libraries of shared assets; cross-session memory; and North Admin analytics down to per-user, per-agent token spend with consumption tiers and alert thresholds.

VB Pulse surveys (July 2026) found 21% of enterprises only monitor agent spend reactively, and 68% traced wrong agent answers to missing business context.

North 2 turns governance — quotas, caps, autonomy policies, per-agent guardrails — into the product's core rather than an afterthought.

Cloud, on-premises and air-gapped deployment plus interchangeable components target regulated buyers and cut vendor lock-in.

Named customer HiddenLayer says visibility and control were the precondition for turning its agent workflows on at all.

When agents start spending real money, governance becomes the product: budget caps, per-agent permissions and portability can differentiate a platform more than benchmark scores.

As of 2026-10-05 North 2 is announced with no public pricing — Cohere says North is priced on the scale and complexity of each deployment. No performance benchmarks were provided. North holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certifications, and HiddenLayer is a named customer running agent workflows on it.
