Flink's survivor bet: $150M at ~$1B to keep quick commerce in Germany and the Netherlands
Berlin's last big rapid-grocery player raised $150M at a ~$1B valuation to prove 15-minute delivery can become profitable.
Flink
What the business is
Flink delivers groceries and daily essentials within minutes from neighborhood hubs across Germany and the Netherlands, with goods supplied by wholesaler REWE.
How it started
Founded in Berlin in 2020, Flink rode the pandemic boom in quick commerce, in which grocers promise delivery in an hour or less from distributed dark stores. European VCs poured $5.5B into speedy grocery startups in 2021 alone; Flink was valued near $3B after DoorDash invested in December 2021 and close to $5B months later.
What happened
The boom reversed. Flink acquired French rival Cajoo in 2022, then exited Austria in December 2022 and France in mid-2023, filing for bankruptcy in each market. Competitors imploded faster: Getir bought Gorillas in 2022, then both withdrew from Germany in April 2024. In September 2024 Flink closed a fresh $150M round ($115M equity, $35M debt) from BOND, Mubadala, Northzone and REWE at a valuation just under $1B — a fraction of its 2022 peak — to fund Germany and the Netherlands alongside Just Eat Takeaway.
How it ended up
Alive and narrowed: as of September 2024 Flink was EBITDA-breakeven in both remaining markets, targeting full-company profitability by Q2 2025 and planning 30 more hubs over the following year.
Background
Flink was the classic quick-commerce boom story: founded in Berlin in 2020, it promised groceries at the door in minutes from distributed dark stores. In the pandemic rush, investors poured $5.5B into European speedy grocery startups in 2021 and Flink's valuation approached $5B. The category then collapsed as interest rates rose and delivery unit economics failed.
Flink survived by retreating. It exited Austria at the end of 2022 and France in 2023, both via bankruptcy filings, while rivals vanished around it — Getir acquired Gorillas in 2022 and both left Germany in April 2024. Flink refocused entirely on Germany and the Netherlands, where REWE supplies its goods and Just Eat Takeaway's Lieferando became a delivery partner.
In September 2024 Flink raised $150M ($115M equity, $35M debt) from existing backers BOND, Mubadala, Northzone and REWE at a valuation just under $1B, down from a 2022 peak near $5B. The company said it was EBITDA-breakeven in both markets, on track for $600M of gross revenue in 2024, up 20% year on year, and targeting full-company profitability by Q2 2025.
What has to be true
- Land grabs die first: Gorillas and Getir over-expanded across countries and collapsed or retreated, leaving Germany's market to Flink.
- The REWE anchor: having the supermarket as supplier and investor aligned incentives and cut the need for separate wholesale.
- Partnership over acquisition: instead of merging with Just Eat Takeaway, Flink took its capital and delivery reach while staying independent.
- Valuation reset honesty: raising at under $1B after a near-$5B peak let the company recapitalize without pretending the boom continued.
What can be applied
When a category's land grab burns out, the survivors shrink to markets where unit economics work: Flink's edge was REWE supply, a delivery partnership and two countries, not speed alone.
Aftermath
As of September 2024 Flink ran 146 hubs across about 80 cities in Germany and the Netherlands, employed 8,900 people and planned 30 new locations in the next 12 months. It reported an average basket of $40, EBITDA break-even in both countries and a target of full profitability by Q2 2025, with expansion beyond its two core markets deferred until that base was solid.
