GrazeMate bets AI drones replace cattle mustering; YC-led A$1.2M, renamed Brumby

GrazeMate builds autonomous drone software that herds cattle between paddocks, estimating weight, grass and water levels from a phone app.

That ranchers will trust fully autonomous drones to move cattle, replacing helicopters — one leased unit scaling to thousands of head beats per-animal collars.

A$1.2 million pre-seed led by Y Combinator, with Antler and NextGen Ventures participating.

Founded in 2025 by Sam Rogers, who grew up on his family's 6,000-head cattle station in Queensland and dropped out of a robotics degree at the University of Sydney. He had seen mustering take hours daily and cost over A$100,000 a year, and believed autonomous drones could do the job of helicopters, motorbikes and horses.

GrazeMate joined Y Combinator's Winter 2026 batch and raised an A$1.2 million pre-seed led by YC in January 2026, with Antler and NextGen Ventures participating. It ran pilot farms in Queensland and New South Wales, mustering thousands of cattle weekly across 1.7 million acres with reinforcement-learning models on DJI drones. The company leases drones and charges a monthly fee, and was renamed Brumby as it turned to the US market.

Still active as of September 2026. GrazeMate renamed itself Brumby, lists as an active YC Winter 2026 company with a three-person team, and says it works with some of the largest cattle ranches in the world while onboarding early US partners.

Mustering is a hated, expensive chore: ranchers spend hours daily and up to $1M a year moving cattle, so automation is easy to price against.

GrazeMate bets on one shared drone instead of per-animal hardware, arguing smart collars cannot make economic sense on huge properties.

Leasing the drone with a software fee turns hardware into a recurring service aligned with the labor it replaces.

The YC Winter 2026 slot and A$1.2M pre-seed let a student founder get hardware in the field on two continents.
