ispace's second Moon landing bet fails as RESILIENCE hard-lands in Mare Frigoris
Japan's ispace bets lunar delivery is a repeatable business; second lander loses contact at 20 km and hard-lands, two years after Mission 1 crashed.

What the business is
ispace designs and builds lunar landers and rovers and sells payload delivery to the Moon — carrying customer instruments, rovers and even art to the lunar surface on fixed-price missions.
How it started
Founded in 2010 in Tokyo by Takeshi Hakamada with the vision of extending the sphere of human life into space, ispace set out to build high-frequency, low-cost transportation to the Moon. Its first HAKUTO-R lander launched in December 2022 and crashed on the lunar surface in April 2023 after misreading its altitude; the company said software remedies were implemented while the hardware design stayed mostly unchanged.
What happened
Mission 2's RESILIENCE lander launched January 15, 2025 on a Falcon 9 rideshare alongside Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, and entered lunar orbit on May 6, 2025. On June 6, 2025 the lander began its landing sequence over Mare Frigoris: it descended from about 100 km to 20 km and fired its main engine as planned, but telemetry was lost as it pitched to a near-vertical attitude. ispace's analysis found the laser rangefinder took too long to return valid measurements, so the lander could not decelerate enough and likely performed a hard landing; a reboot command did not restore contact.
How it ended up
Mission concluded with a hard landing on 2025-06-06 — the second landing failure in ispace's first two missions. The company said it would analyze telemetry and report findings to shareholders and customers; ispace-U.S. is contracted with Draper for a NASA CLPS mission (Apex 1.0) targeted for 2027, and ispace plans seven more missions in the U.S. and Japan through 2029.
Background
ispace is a Tokyo-based startup founded in 2010 by Takeshi Hakamada to turn lunar exploration into a commercial transportation business: design landers and rovers, sell payload delivery to the Moon, and make it frequent and low-cost. Its first HAKUTO-R lander launched in December 2022 and crashed in April 2023 after misreading its altitude.
Mission 2 — SMBC x HAKUTO-R Venture Moon — sent the RESILIENCE lander toward Mare Frigoris, a basaltic plain about 900 km from the Moon's north pole. It launched January 15, 2025 on a Falcon 9 rideshare with Firefly's Blue Ghost and entered lunar orbit on May 6. On June 6, 2025 the landing sequence began: descent from about 100 km to 20 km, main engine burn, near-vertical attitude — then telemetry was lost.
ispace's analysis found the laser rangefinder was slow to return valid distance measurements, so the lander could not decelerate to landing speed and likely hard-landed; a reboot command failed to re-establish contact. RESILIENCE carried five external payloads worth $16 million plus Tenacious, a shoebox-sized rover from ispace Europe that would have been the first European rover to operate on the Moon.
The crash was the company's second failure in two missions, and ispace responded by treating landing as the product: it said it would analyze telemetry and report findings to shareholders and payload customers, while ispace-U.S. pushes an Apex 1.0 mission for NASA's CLPS program with Draper targeted for 2027 and seven more missions planned through 2029.
What has to be true
- Landing is the product: payloads only earn their fee when they arrive intact, so a hard landing turns a nominally successful flight into a failed one in the final minutes.
- Iterating software fixes instead of redesigning kept Mission 2 fast and cheap, but the same altitude-sensing failure mode sank two missions in a row.
- Going public before proving the landing loop front-loaded attention: shares more than doubled in early 2025 on mission hopes, then the crash reset expectations.
- Keeping paying customers on board — $16 million of payloads on a lander that never delivered — is why repeat missions are the only route back to trust.
What can be applied
A business built on landing must treat the landing subsystem as the product: two straight failures traced to altitude sensing show that reaching the Moon without stopping delivers nothing.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02, ispace is still operating as a public company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (9348). It concluded Mission 2, said it would analyze the telemetry and restore trust with shareholders, payload customers, HAKUTO-R partners and supporters. The roadmap runs through ispace-U.S., which is contracted with Draper for NASA's CLPS program to deliver the larger Apex 1.0 lander to the far side's Schrödinger Basin with relay satellites, targeted for 2027; ispace says it plans seven more missions in the U.S. and Japan through 2029.
