Jiyue's robocar bet collapses: Baidu-Geely JV halts after ~14k sales in 2024

Baidu and Geely's Jiyue bet an AI-native 'car robot' would win China's premium EV market; after ~14k sales in 2024 it ran out of cash.

Jiyue (极越汽车)

The betThat an AI-native 'car robot' — Baidu autonomy on Geely's manufacturing, sold direct — could beat premium EV rivals on intelligence rather than volume. No longer exists

What the business is

Baidu-Geely electric-vehicle joint venture selling the Jiyue 01, a premium 'car robot' built around Baidu's Apollo autonomous driving.

How it started

Formed in 2021 as a Baidu-majority joint venture with Geely, aiming to challenge Tesla in smart EVs. After failing to obtain a manufacturing license, the project was restructured with Geely taking the majority stake and relaunched as Jiyue; the Jiyue 01 went on sale in late 2023.

What happened

The Jiyue 01 sold far below plan — 13,834 units in China from January to November 2024. On December 11, 2024 CEO Xia Yiping told employees the company had financial problems; news broke of an unpaid supplier and missing social security payments. Videos of Xia surrounded by staff demanding payment went viral, and on December 13 Baidu and Geely pledged to cover payroll and severance — but on December 16 they gave no sign of investing further.

How it ended up

Collapsed as an operating company: the venture wound down in December 2024 amid a reported ~¥7B financial gap. In November 2025 Shanghai Jidu filed for pre-restructuring; on April 29, 2026 the Shanghai No. 3 Intermediate People's Court approved substantive consolidation restructuring of six affiliated companies, which are now recruiting strategic investors.

Background

Jiyue (极越) was created in 2021 as a Baidu-Geely joint venture to challenge Tesla in smart EVs, with Baidu initially holding the majority. When the project failed to obtain a manufacturing license, it was restructured with Geely taking the majority and relaunched as Jiyue. The Jiyue 01, pitched as a 'car robot' built around Baidu's Apollo autonomous driving, went on sale in late 2023 through direct-sales stores.

Sales never approached the bet. Jiyue sold only 13,834 units in China from January to November 2024, and the venture burned through parent capital. On December 11, 2024 CEO Xia Yiping admitted to employees that the company faced financial trouble; the same day news broke of an unpaid supplier and missing social security contributions. Videos of Xia surrounded by staff demanding payment went viral, and Geely and Baidu pledged on December 13 to cover payroll and severance.

By December 16, 2024, both parents had given no sign of further investment, and the company wound down operations amid a reported ~¥7B financial gap. In November 2025 Shanghai Jidu Automobile filed for pre-restructuring with the Shanghai No. 3 Intermediate People's Court; on April 29, 2026 the court approved substantive consolidation restructuring of six affiliated companies, which are now recruiting strategic investors. The robocar bet did not survive its founders' patience.

What has to be true

  • Differentiating on intelligence did not excuse weak sales: ~1.3k units per month could not cover the cost structure of a two-giant JV.
  • Governance with two strategic parents meant no single owner felt responsible for continuing losses — each could walk away.
  • The license restructure that made Geely the majority owner diluted the original AI-car vision into a conventional premium EV fight.
  • The parents' strategic patience, not the product, set the deadline: when Baidu paused capital injection and Geely stopped manufacturing support, the company collapsed within days.
  • A premium, intelligence-led brand needs either volume or a patron willing to fund years of losses; by 2024 Jiyue had neither.

What can be applied

A two-giant joint venture has no adult in the room when cash runs out: monthly sales of ~1.3k never justified the burn, and the parents' strategic patience — not the product — set the deadline.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 Jiyue is in court-supervised restructuring rather than operating. After the December 2024 collapse it spent 2025 seeking a buyer; 36Kr (2025-08) reported restructuring negotiations accelerating. Shanghai Jidu filed for pre-restructuring in November 2025, and on 2026-04-29 six affiliates were ordered into substantive consolidation restructuring, now recruiting strategic investors. Baidu and Geely pledge to keep supporting after-sales and repairs for owners. Whether the brand revives depends on an investor willing to rebuild trust broken by the December 2024 shutdown.
