What the business is
Keel is a London startup whose open-source platform lets operations teams build custom operational software without waiting on engineering.
The bet
Companies will replace one-size-fits-all ERPs with operator-built systems on an open platform, not Oracle, SAP or NetSuite.
Starting capital
$6M seed led by Earlybird and LocalGlobe, October 2024
How it started
Benoit Machefer, Tom Frew and Jon Bretman ran operations at Echo, Europe's fastest-growing online pharmacy, where spreadsheets gave way to a hand-built stack that scaled 4X in four months to $80 million revenue during COVID. After Echo's successful acquisition, they founded Keel in 2022.
What happened
The pitch: keep the 80% of tasks off-the-shelf tools handle, and build the brittle 20% properly on Keel's backend engine, API-first solutions and auto-generated admin tools, with engineering best practices operators can learn. Early customer HIVED, a delivery startup, built driver shift management with a single ops team member and was extending into finance, facilities and payroll. Earlybird, which says it backed the team 'since day 1,' led the $6 million seed with LocalGlobe in October 2024.
What has to be true
Ops teams that outgrow no-code face an all-or-nothing leap to rigid, lengthy and costly ERP implementations.
Engineering time flows to customer-facing product, so internal tools rot - the maintenance gap Keel productizes.
The founders lived the problem: Echo's regulated pharmacy operations defeated every off-the-shelf option available.
Open source and API-first design lowers the trust barrier for technical operators burned by proprietary lock-in.
What can be applied
The founder who was the customer is the wedge: Keel sells the exact internal tools its operators once had to build to survive.
Aftermath
As of the October 2024 announcement, the seed was funding platform development centered on user experience, and Keel was bringing the platform to a wider audience of businesses aiming to avoid ERP implementations.
