Leona Health bets a WhatsApp AI copilot fixes LatAm doctor chaos; a16z leads $14M seed

An AI copilot that plugs into a doctor's WhatsApp: it categorizes patient messages, suggests replies, and routes routine requests to staff.

That LatAm doctors already on WhatsApp will run patient communication through an AI copilot, not clinic software — and that it can scale into a global healthcare OS.

Founded in 2024 by Caroline Merin (first LatAm GM of Uber Eats, then COO of Rappi) with COO Arela Solis and CTO Tom Chokel; her premise was that in LatAm private healthcare, care starts with a WhatsApp message — and doctors were drowning in them.

Raised a pre-seed led by General Catalyst, then ran a stealth pilot. In December 2025 it announced a $14M seed led by a16z with Accel and angels Kate Ryder, David Vélez and Simón Borrero, and launched across 14 countries and 22 specialties.

Still live and expanding: a 13-person team split between Mexico City and Silicon Valley, with an autonomous scheduling agent and global expansion on the roadmap.

Merin had firsthand evidence from her Uber Eats and Rappi years that patients in LatAm choose doctors partly by how fast they reply on WhatsApp.

Doctors are solo operators with no clinic software, so the addressable pain — hours lost to administrative messaging — is huge and concentrated.

a16z's Julie Yoo framed it as infrastructure that starts where people already communicate, which is why top-tier VCs and LatAm founder-angels backed a seed-stage regional product.

The same channel logic should transfer beyond LatAm, making the wedge look like a global healthcare OS rather than a regional niche.

Build where the user already is: doctors wouldn't adopt another portal, but they already live in WhatsApp — Leona wrapped the product around the existing habit instead of asking anyone to change.

As of December 17, 2025, Leona Health had announced its $14M seed and its launch across 14 Latin American countries and 22 specialties, coming out of a stealth pilot. The 13-person team is split between Mexico City and Silicon Valley, and the roadmap includes a fully autonomous agent for conversational scheduling and non-clinical automation, then expansion beyond Latin America.
