Founded in 2024 by Caroline Merin (first LatAm GM of Uber Eats, then COO of Rappi) with COO Arela Solis and CTO Tom Chokel; her premise was that in LatAm private healthcare, care starts with a WhatsApp message — and doctors were drowning in them.

Background
Leona Health's bet is that Latin American doctors will not be moved onto electronic health records — just 35% of the region uses EHRs versus 90% in the US — so patient communication will keep happening on WhatsApp, and the winning product is the one that sits inside that channel. Founded in 2024 by Caroline Merin, ex-COO of Rappi and the first Latin American general manager of Uber Eats, the company built an AI copilot that integrates with a doctor's WhatsApp account while the doctor works from the Leona app.
The product categorizes incoming messages by urgency, suggests replies, and routes routine or administrative requests to nurses and other staff, so a doctor who sees 20 patients a day no longer comes home to 100 unanswered messages. Early user Dr. Inés Álvarez, a Mexico City physician with over 1,200 patients, reported receiving more than 100 messages a day and said Leona gave her back over 10 hours a week.
The bet paid off with capital and distribution: in December 2025 Leona announced a $14M seed led by Andreessen Horowitz, with General Catalyst, Accel, and angel checks from Nubank CEO David Vélez, Rappi CEO Simón Borrero, and Maven Clinic CEO Kate Ryder. The same day it said the service is live in 14 Latin American countries across 22 specialties, with an autonomous agent for scheduling and intake on the way.
What has to be true
- Merin had firsthand evidence from her Uber Eats and Rappi years that patients in LatAm choose doctors partly by how fast they reply on WhatsApp.
- Doctors are solo operators with no clinic software, so the addressable pain — hours lost to administrative messaging — is huge and concentrated.
- a16z's Julie Yoo framed it as infrastructure that starts where people already communicate, which is why top-tier VCs and LatAm founder-angels backed a seed-stage regional product.
