The betThat the absurd extreme of cozy simulators—one needle in five million hay pieces—is the product: the X post is the trailer, virality replaces paid marketing.Building

What the business is

Studio BitDot is an indie game studio; its debut viral title Needle In A Haystack Simulator (PC, Q4 2026) asks players to find one needle among 5,000,000 individually-grabbable hay pieces, with optional upgrades, automation and up to 8-player co-op.

How it started

Nas Nakarus posted a concept clip on X on 2026-08-22: 'i made a game where you literally have to find a needle in a haystack… 5,000,000 pieces of hay and only 1 needle.' He said the idea came from pushing the popularity of mundane-task simulators on Steam to its limit.

What happened

The post exploded: tens of millions of views within days, 10K+ reposts and ~192K likes; Roblox got 14 copycats within 48 hours and look-alike Steam pages appeared (Game*Spark). On 08-28 Studio BitDot published the official Steam store page—Nas's own post-mortem: 'the problem was not having a Steam page ready.' The page adds co-op (up to 8), sellable valuables and optional automation, with a no-upgrades hard mode.

How it ended up

Still in development: the Steam page is live with wishlist and playtest recruitment, with launch planned for Q4 2026.

Background

Studio BitDot is a small indie studio led by Nas Nakarus. In August 2026 it bet that the most absurd possible take on Steam's repetitive-task simulators—one needle hidden inside 5,000,000 individual pieces of hay—could be a game people actually want, and that the announcement itself could do all the marketing.

The bet ran through a single X post on 2026-08-22. Nakarus's caption was the whole pitch: 'i made a game where you literally have to find a needle in a haystack—the catch is there are 5,000,000 pieces of hay and only 1 needle.' Within days the clip passed ~50 million views, drew ~192,000 likes and 10,000+ reposts, and spawned 14 Roblox copies within 48 hours.

There was a catch for the studio: the game had no Steam page when the post went viral, so the attention initially had nowhere to convert. On 08-28 Studio BitDot published the official store page for Needle In A Haystack Simulator, adding multiplayer co-op (up to 8), sellable valuables, upgrades or a no-tools hard mode, with launch planned for Q4 2026.

As of 2026-09-02 the page is live with wishlist and playtest signups. Nakarus's public lesson from the moment: 'the problem was not having a Steam page ready'—prepare the storefront before the post, or the virality leaks.

What has to be true

  • The extreme of a trend is itself a hook: an idiom made literal needs no explanation, so a one-line caption worked as the entire trailer.
  • Virality became the launch channel—52M impressions in six days without any paid campaign, out-reaching major publishers' announcements.
  • The missing Steam page was the leak: attention that cannot convert is wasted, which is exactly the lesson the founder drew.
  • Copycats validated the concept fast—14 Roblox clones in 48 hours—but the original studio kept the official storefront and first-mover identity.

What can be applied

A premise so absurd it becomes the hook can be its own marketing—but virality only converts if the store page already exists; the founder's own lesson was the missing Steam page.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02, Needle In A Haystack Simulator is in development with a live Steam page (app 5159870) accepting wishlists and playtest applications; the planned release window is Q4 2026. Studio BitDot, which previously shipped the desktop-companion game Nana to Issho in late 2025 and has the cyberpunk action title Vigilancer 2099 in development, is riding the attention to convert a viral moment into a storefront, while the post's metrics continued to climb through late August.
