Motif Technologies Bets Self-Developed LLM Can Be South Korea's National Team

Spun off from MOREH, it open-sourced a 2.6B model; 12.7B ranked first in South Korea; raised KRW 24B in Series B.

The betSouth Korean firms should self-develop a Korean-language-priority large model, not just rent OpenAI/Google models, starting small, then scaling with government compute.Live

What the business is

Motif Technologies (모티프테크놀로지스) is an AI foundation model company spun off in February 2025 from South Korean AI infrastructure company MOREH (모레). It self-develops and open-sources models including Motif-2.6B, Motif-Image-6B, and Motif-2-12.7B, and provides AI foundation models and enterprise AX (AI transformation) solutions to South Korean companies.

Starting capitalKRW 24 billion (240亿韩元) Series B (May 2026: NICE Investment Partners and Nautilus added investment; Dito and Forest Ventures newly entered); amount disclosed, valuation not disclosed.

How it started

In February 2025, South Korean AI infrastructure company MOREH (모레) spun off its AI business into subsidiary Motif Technologies (모티프테크놀로지스), with Lim Jeong-hwan (임정환), who came from the KAIST mathematics department and holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Oxford, serving as CEO. The company's philosophy is 'purely independent design': not borrowing the structures of overseas open-source models, but self-developing from the algorithm level.

What happened

Four months after founding, it open-sourced Motif-2.6B with 2.6B parameters, with performance exceeding some 7B-parameter models; its technical report sparked discussion among HuggingFace engineers and researchers from OpenAI. In July 2025, it released the text-to-image model Motif-Image-6B; in November, it released the self-developed LLM Motif-2-12.7B, which took first place in South Korea on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index. In February 2026, it was selected as an elite team in South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT 'Independent AI Foundation Model' project, alongside LG AI Research, Upstage, and SK Telecom. On May 27, 2026, it announced a KRW 24 billion (240亿韩元) Series B.

How it ended up

Still in progress: funds are used for independent AI foundation models and enterprise AX solutions; it is jointly developing a 300B-class reasoning LLM with 17 institutions including MOREH (모레), Seoul National University, and KAIST, and plans to upgrade to a 310B-class VLM and a 320B-class VLA. Valuation and revenue are not disclosed.

Background

Motif Technologies (모티프테크놀로지스) is an AI foundation model company spun off in February 2025 from South Korean AI infrastructure company MOREH (모레). CEO Lim Jeong-hwan (임정환 / 林正焕) came from the KAIST mathematics department and holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Oxford. The company writes 'purely independent design' into its philosophy: not borrowing the structures of overseas open-source models, but self-developing from the algorithm level, with the goal of building a proprietary foundation model in South Korea that does not depend on OpenAI/Google.

Just 4 months after founding, Motif open-sourced Motif-2.6B with 2.6B parameters, whose performance exceeded some 7B-parameter models; its technical report sparked discussion among HuggingFace engineers and researchers from OpenAI. In July 2025, it launched the text-to-image model Motif-Image-6B; in November, it released the self-developed LLM Motif-2-12.7B, which ranked first in South Korea on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index.

In February 2026, Motif was selected as an elite team in South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT 'Independent AI Foundation Model' project, alongside LG AI Research, Upstage, and SK Telecom, receiving GPU infrastructure support. On May 27, 2026, it announced a KRW 24 billion (240亿韩元) Series B, with existing shareholders NICE Investment Partners and Nautilus adding investment, and Dito Investment and Forest Ventures newly entering. Investors assessed its strength as not the application layer, but research capability to design model structures from scratch.

Funds will be invested in independent AI foundation model development and enterprise AX solutions. Motif is jointly developing a 300B-class reasoning LLM with 17 institutions including MOREH (모레), Seoul National University, and KAIST, and plans to upgrade to a 310B-class VLM and a 320B-class VLA. Investors believe that the performance of the 300B model to be released in the second half of 2026 will be a key test of whether Motif can become a reliable alternative to GPT/Claude for South Korean companies.

What has to be true

  • Self-developed algorithms differentiate from fine-tuning foreign models.
  • Small models prove capability: 2.6B beat 7B, 12.7B ranked first.
  • Selected for government elite team, gaining GPU compute and national status.
  • MOREH background provides full-stack engineering: GPU, ops, post-training, RLHF.
  • Market needs domestic alternative; 300B performance is key.

What can be applied

Small team path: open-source small model to build trust, then scale via national compute. But transfer to 300B is unproven.

Aftermath

As of May 27, 2026, Motif had just announced a KRW 24 billion (240亿韩元) Series B; cumulative funding amount is not disclosed, and valuation and revenue are not public. The company is developing a 300B-class reasoning LLM with 17 institutions including MOREH (모레), Seoul National University, and KAIST, and has planned a 310B VLM and 320B VLA roadmap. Previously released Motif-2.6B, Motif-Image-6B, and Motif-2-12.7B are all open source, and the 12.7B model ranked first in South Korea on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.
