In February 2025, South Korean AI infrastructure company MOREH (모레) spun off its AI business into subsidiary Motif Technologies (모티프테크놀로지스), with Lim Jeong-hwan (임정환), who came from the KAIST mathematics department and holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Oxford, serving as CEO. The company's philosophy is 'purely independent design': not borrowing the structures of overseas open-source models, but self-developing from the algorithm level.

Four months after founding, it open-sourced Motif-2.6B with 2.6B parameters, with performance exceeding some 7B-parameter models; its technical report sparked discussion among HuggingFace engineers and researchers from OpenAI. In July 2025, it released the text-to-image model Motif-Image-6B; in November, it released the self-developed LLM Motif-2-12.7B, which took first place in South Korea on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index. In February 2026, it was selected as an elite team in South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT 'Independent AI Foundation Model' project, alongside LG AI Research, Upstage, and SK Telecom. On May 27, 2026, it announced a KRW 24 billion (240亿韩元) Series B.
