Open Wearables bets MIT code beats proprietary health APIs; PH #2

Open Wearables is an MIT-licensed, self-hosted platform that unifies 200+ wearable devices (Apple Health, Garmin, Whoop, Oura, Polar, Strava, and more) into one REST API, computes health scores, and exposes them to AI via an MCP server; built and maintained by Momentum.

Momentum, a healthtech software house with more than 10 years in the space, launched Open Wearables in December 2025 as what it calls the first open-source platform unifying data from over 200 wearable devices into one developer-friendly API. Founder Jan Kamiński framed it as a direct challenge to the 'rent-seeking model' of proprietary SaaS aggregators, which force health startups to choose between months of custom integration work and vendor lock-in.

The platform shipped as self-hosted, MIT-licensed infrastructure: a FastAPI/PostgreSQL/Redis/Celery stack deployable with Docker Compose, with Sleep and Resilience scores, SDKs for iOS, Android, Flutter, and React Native, and an MCP server so LLMs can reason over structured health context. It launched on Product Hunt on April 29, 2026, earning #2 Product of the Day with 583 upvotes and 313 comments; community contributors later added Oura Ring, Fitbit, and Ultrahuman integrations.

Still running and live in production deployments. As of late August 2026 Open Wearables is actively maintained by Momentum's engineering team plus community contributors, with enterprise support contracts and custom deployment as the monetization path; no managed cloud version has been released.

Momentum had solved the same wearable-integration problem for clients repeatedly, so open-sourcing it converted an internal cost into a community asset.

Self-hosting removes the third-party data processor, which structurally simplifies HIPAA and data-residency compliance for health startups.
