How it started
In March 2024 Cognition's Devin demo showed an agent planning and shipping software end-to-end. Robert Brennan, a Google alum then working on ML infrastructure at startups, was as impressed as every other engineer - and worried the technology was being kept in a walled garden. He started OpenDevin from a text file on GitHub; Carnegie Mellon NLP professor Graham Neubig and UIUC researcher Xingyao Wang joined as co-founders, and the project grew into an open-source implementation.

OpenHands is an open-source AI agent that does software engineering end-to-end: planning, writing code, running commands, testing, and deploying. What has to be true
- The timing was perfect: Devin's March 2024 demo created mass demand for coding agents while leaving the open-source community nothing to run, extend, or audit - OpenDevin filled exactly that gap.
- Model-agnostic by design: letting users bring any LLM removed lock-in and made the agent useful to the widest community, which is why it out-starred single-model competitors.
- The open repo was the marketing: stars, forks, and contributors did the recruiting and press work, so the $5M seed announcement arrived with credibility already built.
