OpenHands bets the open-source coding agent beats Devin's walled garden

An open-source AI software-development agent (formerly OpenDevin) that plans, writes, tests, and deploys code end-to-end, plus a self-hostable cloud agent platform for running it at enterprise scale with any LLM.

That developers would rally around an open, model-agnostic coding agent they can own and extend - and later pay for a secure, self-hostable enterprise version.

$5M seed led by Menlo Ventures (2024-09) with Pillar, Betaworks, Rebellion, and angels including Soumith Chintala; $18.8M Series A led by Madrona (2025-11) with Menlo, Obvious Ventures, Fujitsu Ventures, Alumni Ventures - $23.8M total.

In March 2024 Cognition's Devin demo showed an agent planning and shipping software end-to-end. Robert Brennan, a Google alum then working on ML infrastructure at startups, was as impressed as every other engineer - and worried the technology was being kept in a walled garden. He started OpenDevin from a text file on GitHub; Carnegie Mellon NLP professor Graham Neubig and UIUC researcher Xingyao Wang joined as co-founders, and the project grew into an open-source implementation.

OpenDevin was renamed OpenHands and spread fast: 30,000+ GitHub stars and 150+ contributors by September 2024, when All Hands AI announced a $5M seed led by Menlo Ventures with a plan of open core plus paid enterprise features. In November 2025 the company raised an $18.8M Series A led by Madrona (with Menlo, Obvious Ventures, Fujitsu Ventures, Alumni Ventures), announced an AMD collaboration, and reported 60,000+ stars, 7,000 forks, and 4M downloads - with early enterprise adopters cutting maintenance backlogs up to 50% and vulnerability resolution from days to minutes.

Still live and scaling: OpenHands ships an open agent platform (Agent Canvas) that runs locally, in Docker, or in the customer's cloud, works with any LLM and any ACP-compatible agent, and integrates with GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket, Slack, and Jira - used by engineers at AMD, Apple, Google, Amazon, Netflix, TikTok, NVIDIA, and Mastercard.

The timing was perfect: Devin's March 2024 demo created mass demand for coding agents while leaving the open-source community nothing to run, extend, or audit - OpenDevin filled exactly that gap.

Model-agnostic by design: letting users bring any LLM removed lock-in and made the agent useful to the widest community, which is why it out-starred single-model competitors.

The open repo was the marketing: stars, forks, and contributors did the recruiting and press work, so the $5M seed announcement arrived with credibility already built.

Enterprise trust followed the code: because the platform was open and self-hostable, teams could audit and run it in their own cloud, converting community momentum into paid adoption.

A closed demo can launch the open alternative: Devin's video created demand, and OpenHands captured it by being open and model-agnostic - community momentum converted into enterprise revenue.

As of September 2026 OpenHands is live and scaling as the open platform for cloud coding agents. The company offers open source plus OpenHands Cloud and Enterprise deployments, integrates with GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket, Slack, and Jira, and runs agents in sandboxed Docker runtimes with role-based access control and audit trails. It reported 60,000+ GitHub stars, 7,000 forks, and 4M downloads in its November 2025 Series A announcement, and has an ongoing AMD collaboration on hardware-optimized agent servers.
