起因

In March 2024 Cognition's Devin demo showed an agent planning and shipping software end-to-end. Robert Brennan, a Google alum then working on ML infrastructure at startups, was as impressed as every other engineer - and worried the technology was being kept in a walled garden. He started OpenDevin from a text file on GitHub; Carnegie Mellon NLP professor Graham Neubig and UIUC researcher Xingyao Wang joined as co-founders, and the project grew into an open-source implementation.

OpenDevin was renamed OpenHands and spread fast: 30,000+ GitHub stars and 150+ contributors by September 2024, when All Hands AI announced a $5M seed led by Menlo Ventures with a plan of open core plus paid enterprise features. In November 2025 the company raised an $18.8M Series A led by Madrona (with Menlo, Obvious Ventures, Fujitsu Ventures, Alumni Ventures), announced an AMD collaboration, and reported 60,000+ stars, 7,000 forks, and 4M downloads - with early enterprise adopters cutting maintenance backlogs up to 50% and vulnerability resolution from days to minutes.

Still live and scaling: OpenHands ships an open agent platform (Agent Canvas) that runs locally, in Docker, or in the customer's cloud, works with any LLM and any ACP-compatible agent, and integrates with GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket, Slack, and Jira - used by engineers at AMD, Apple, Google, Amazon, Netflix, TikTok, NVIDIA, and Mastercard.
