Refined Robotics bets wheel-legged delivery bots can climb stairs at 25x energy efficiency

Refined Robotics builds wheel-legged last-mile delivery robots using VGCM technology that claims 25x better energy efficiency than similar robots, targeting 30kg payloads and eight-plus hours of runtime while traversing stairs and rubble.

Co-founders Nick Hafner (CEO) and Yui Bishago (CTO) formed the company through Antler Residency in Japan Batch 4, a ten-week program that picked 79 founders from more than 1,100 applicants. Their pitch: today's last-mile delivery robots work on flat sidewalks, but Japanese delivery runs into stairs, rubble, and a shrinking pool of drivers, so they designed a wheel-legged robot around VGCM (variable ground contact mechanics) claimed to be 25x more energy-efficient than comparable robots.

In 2025 Antler's investment committee backed Refined Robotics with a ¥24M pre-seed through its Inception Residency model, with up to ¥37.5M in additional committed follow-on; across its 2025 Japan portfolio Antler invested ¥240M in ten startups selected from more than 2,100 applications, about 0.5%. The company was aiming for a 30kg payload and more than eight hours of runtime, and in January 2026 Antler featured it in its Japan portfolio announcement.

Japan's logistics industry faces a structural driver shortage, making delivery automation an urgent sell rather than a nice-to-have.
