Blue Origin builds New Glenn, a 98-meter reusable orbital rocket with seven BE-4 methane-oxygen engines and a 7-meter fairing, targeting commercial megaconstellation, national-security and NASA lunar missions, alongside its suborbital New Shepard line.

起因

Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin spent more than a decade developing New Glenn — its first orbital rocket — while flying only suborbital passenger missions on New Shepard. The first launch attempt, on January 13, 2025, was scrubbed over ice in a purge line on an auxiliary power unit; after a weather delay and an unplanned hold when a boat entered restricted waters, NG-1 lifted off from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral at 2:03 a.m. ET on January 16.

经过

NG-1 reached its primary goal: the second stage completed two planned burns and put its Blue Ring Pathfinder payload — which stayed attached inside the fairing — into a 2,409 by 19,224 kilometer orbit. The reusable first stage was lost during descent: three of seven BE-4 engines relit, then telemetry stopped, and the FAA ordered a mishap investigation. On flight two, November 13, 2025, New Glenn carried NASA's ESCAPADE Mars probes and landed its booster on a barge at sea — the first time a company other than SpaceX recovered an orbital-class booster. Flight three, on April 19, 2026, reused that same booster successfully, but the upper stage underperformed and placed AST SpaceMobile's BlueBird 7 satellite in an orbit too low to sustain operations.

结果

By April 2026 Blue Origin had proven the hard parts of reuse — orbit, booster recovery and re-flight — but failed its first paid delivery: the BlueBird 7 satellite was set to de-orbit, the loss covered by AST SpaceMobile's insurance, and the FAA ordered an investigation into the upper-stage failure.
