Kyoto Fusioneering (KF), founded in 2019, supplies the machinery around a fusion plant rather than the reactor itself: high-power microwave gyrotrons that heat plasma past 100 million degrees Celsius, tritium fuel-cycle systems that recycle unburned fuel, and breeding-blanket and thermal-cycle systems that harvest energy and breed new fuel. The company works across every confinement approach, operates in five countries (Japan, US, UK, Germany, Canada), and runs the UNITY program of staged demonstrations: UNITY-1 in Kyoto (a largely complete power-generation test plant), UNITY-2 at Chalk River with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (a first continuous integrated deuterium-tritium fuel cycle, with tritium testing due within the year) and UNITY-3 at Oak Ridge with ORNL and the US Department of Energy (a breeding-blanket neutron facility targeting 2028 completion). KF reports life-to-date sales of about JPY 14 billion ($88 million) against JPY 32.98 billion ($207 million) in cumulative equity.

KF was founded in 2019 in Kyoto by Satoshi Konishi and colleagues, building on gyrotron technology developed by Japanese research institutions. Rather than pursuing a reactor concept like most fusion startups, the team chose the equipment and fuel systems around the reaction, on the logic that whichever confinement approach wins, every plant needs plasma heating, a tritium fuel cycle and a breeding blanket. The company began taking gyrotron orders from public and private fusion programs worldwide and expanded into the US, UK, Germany and Canada.

Through 2025 and 2026 KF industrialized its position: it opened a gyrotron R&D center in Takashima, Shiga Prefecture, partnered with Shimadzu on a tritium-safe turbomolecular pump prototype, and built the UNITY program with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (through the Fusion Fuel Cycles joint venture), Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the DOE. On 11 August 2026 TechCrunch reported the DOE and Tennessee grants for Unity-3 and the move of KF's US headquarters to Oak Ridge; on 24 August the company announced the Series D first close, roughly doubling its equity base, with investors spanning a government green-transformation agency, an infrastructure operator (JR East) and global crossover funds, and it committed the proceeds to UNITY, gyrotron mass-production capacity and operations across its five markets.

As of early September 2026 the capital is banked but the hard proof is still ahead. UNITY-1 in Kyoto is largely complete and running isotope-extraction tests with integrated power and hydrogen generation from this fall; UNITY-2's real-tritium campaign at Chalk River is expected within the year; and UNITY-3 is in design toward a 2028 completion. KF's open risk is industry timing: mass gyrotron production pays off only if fusion programs order at scale, and the reactor designs it serves are themselves years from commercial operation.
