PopSockets
PopSockets makes the PopSocket, a collapsible disc that sticks to the back of a phone and works as a grip, stand and headphone holder; the company sells it worldwide through retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy, Target, T-Mobile and Apple, plus promotional-product channels that print logos on the grips.
A 2012 Kickstarter raised roughly $15,000–17,000, and Barnett added several hundred thousand dollars of his own savings; TechCrunch summarizes the launch capital as under $500,000, largely insurance money after his house burned down, with no institutional investors.
起因
David Barnett was a tenured philosophy professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, when a knotted headphone cord pushed him to hack a solution: two buttons glued to the back of his iPhone 3. Friends and family called it the stupidest thing they had ever seen, but the reaction of a group of middle-schoolers on campus convinced him it could sell. He incorporated PopSockets in 2011, ran a Kickstarter in 2012 and sold his first products in 2014.
经过
Barnett went through roughly 60–70 prototype rounds before the accordion mechanism worked, then learned retail the hard way: two-packs at $10 sat on shelves until he switched to selling a single unit at $10 with a hand diagram on the package, and weekly sales jumped 10–20 times. PopSockets went viral through celebrities including the Kardashians and Gigi Hadid, middle-school wholesale programs and the promotional-products industry, became profitable by the end of its first year, and landed Walmart, Best Buy, Target, T-Mobile and Apple, reaching about 70,000 retail doors before the pandemic.
结果
Still operating with no institutional investors: TechCrunch reported in March 2026 that PopSockets had sold 290 million units across 115 countries over eleven years. Barnett, who fought Amazon at a reported $10–20M cost and later stepped down, handed the CEO role to a successor who grew up inside the company.
