How it started

Sanghvi started building what became Alteon straight out of high school in 2023, learning by making — and crashing — radio-controlled models before developing early prototypes. What happened

Alteon runs a 20-person team from a 10,000-square-foot Bengaluru facility, building four to five aircraft a week and logging 200+ test flights in the 30 days before the round. In its Bay of Bengal test the aircraft autonomously completed seven O-shaped cycles at over 62 mph, flying within 1 meter of the ocean's surface; outside experts called it a promising first result, with sustained energy-neutral flight still unproven.

Background

Alteon is a Bengaluru deep-tech startup betting that albatross physics can do for aircraft what fuel tanks and batteries cannot: keep them airborne for more than a year. Founder Samay Sanghvi, 20, began the project straight out of high school in 2023, learning to build aircraft by making and crashing radio-controlled models, and formally founded Alteon in 2025 with early backing from Emergent Ventures and 1517.

The company's aircraft use dynamic soaring, the maneuver albatrosses use to extract energy from wind shear: flying low over the ocean, climbing and turning through faster-moving air, then diving to repeat the cycle. Alteon's 3-meter-wingspan prototype is designed to eventually use its propellers as turbines, recharging batteries from wind energy, so propulsion can be switched off entirely. The startup announced a $2.5M pre-seed on August 31, 2026, led by solo investor Lachy Groom with Together Fund participating.

The evidence so far is promising but incomplete. Alteon's Bay of Bengal test saw the aircraft complete seven autonomous O-shaped cycles at over 62 mph within one meter of the water's surface, and the team logged more than 200 test flights in the 30 days before the round. MIT-trained dynamic-soaring researcher Gabriel Bousquet called it a promising first result, while noting that sustaining flight on real-world wind — amid turbulence, waves and changing light — is the harder, still-unproven challenge.
