Background

Skyroot Aerospace, founded in 2018 by former ISRO engineers Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, bet that India's emerging small-satellite industry would need a private rocket, not just the state-run ISRO. India's 2020 space reforms allowed private firms to use ISRO's launch pads, and Skyroot's 2022 Vikram-S flight made it the first Indian private company to reach space on a suborbital mission.

In May 2026, Skyroot raised $60 million in a round co-led by Sherpalo Ventures and Singapore's GIC, with funds managed by BlackRock, valuing the Hyderabad startup at $1.1 billion - India's first space-tech unicorn. SpaceNews reported the round brought total funding to $160 million, to be spent scaling Vikram-1 production and developing the larger Vikram-2 vehicle.

On 18 July 2026, Vikram-1's Mission Aagaman lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre and reached its planned 450-km low Earth orbit about 15 minutes later, becoming the first commercial Indian rocket to reach orbit - and doing it on the first attempt. The flight carried two cubesats and hosted payloads from Dcubed, Cosmoserve and others.

The company was already scaling: SpaceNews reported plans for up to two more Vikram-1 launches in 2026 and a Vikram-1U variant with strap-on boosters lifting payload capacity to 550 kg, with Vikram-2 targeting 2027.

The launch gave India private orbital capability - SpaceNews called it a milestone in building a commercial space industry - and validated the sector for investors: India's space economy was estimated at $8.4 billion with projections of $44 billion by 2033. Vikram-2, a heavier vehicle with a cryogenic stage, is targeted for 2027, and a strap-on Vikram-1U variant is designed to carry 550 kg to LEO.
