What the business is

Wuthering Waves (鸣潮) is a free-to-play, open-world action RPG with gacha monetization, released worldwide on May 22–23, 2024 for iOS, Android and PC by Chengdu-founded Kuro Games.

How it started

Kuro Games, founded in 2014 and based in Chengdu (China Daily, Sept 2025), announced Wuthering Waves in March 2024. It launched worldwide May 22–23, 2024 with more than 30M pre-registrations and was widely framed as the strongest 'Genshin killer' challenger yet in the open-world gacha category.

What happened

The launch was rocky — server and performance problems drew immediate criticism — but the game hit #1 for downloads in over 100 regions within days and Kuro responded with in-game compensation, which mobilematters.gg credited with retaining players through the issues. It passed 30M downloads in three weeks (June 11, 2024) and $150M in gross mobile revenue in just over four months, led by Japan (23%), China (23%), Korea (17%) and the US (15%) per Appmagic estimates reported by mobilegamer.biz. Kuro appeared on Hurun's 2024 Global Unicorn List and later moved its headquarters to Guangzhou's Tianhe Smart City as it grew.

How it ended up

Wuthering Waves is still running and expanding: a PS5 version shipped in January 2025, a Mac version followed in March 2025, and it came to Steam in April 2025. China Daily reported in Sept 2025 that the game had surpassed 30M downloads globally and climbed to top spots on key charts in various markets.

Background

Kuro Games' bet was that the open-world gacha crown did not belong to Genshin Impact by right — only by default. Wuthering Waves launched worldwide on May 22–23, 2024 on iOS, Android and PC with more than 30M pre-registrations, and within five days the official account announced the game held the #1 spot for downloads on the Top Charts in over 100 regions (May 27, 2024).

The differentiator was combat: Kuro leaned into faster, more technical, action-first fights and a grittier world instead of copying Genshin's exploration-led loop. The debut was technically rocky — server and performance complaints were immediate — but the game still passed 30M downloads in three weeks (mobilegamer.biz, June 11, 2024), and Kuro's compensation rewards were credited with keeping players through the fixes.

The revenue followed the downloads: Appmagic estimates reported by mobilegamer.biz put gross mobile revenue past $150M in just over four months, split across Japan (23%), China (23%), Korea (17%) and the US (15%) — evidence the bet was global, not China-only. Kuro Games, founded 2014, made Hurun's 2024 Global Unicorn List and kept expanding the game onto PS5 (Jan 2025), Mac (March 2025) and Steam (April 2025).

What has to be true

  • Kuro picked a differentiator — fast, technical combat and a grittier tone — instead of cloning Genshin's exploration-led loop, giving players a reason to switch.
  • 30M pre-registrations plus a synchronized global launch turned day-one demand into chart #1s across 100+ regions.
  • Launch-day technical failures were answered with in-game compensation and communication, retaining players through the worst of the rocky debut.
  • Revenue spread across Japan, China, Korea and the US showed the game was a global chart story, not just a home-market hit.

What can be applied

A challenger can top charts by differentiating the core loop — combat over exploration — and launching globally with 30M pre-registrations; a rocky debut is survivable with compensation.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02, Wuthering Waves is live and expanding across platforms — PS5 (Jan 2025), Mac (March 2025) and Steam (April 2025) — and Kuro Games, founded in 2014, moved its headquarters to Guangzhou's Tianhe Smart City in 2025 to support growth. China Daily described the game in Sept 2025 as surpassing 30M downloads and topping key charts in various markets.
