Pivotal is the Palo Alto company backed by Larry Page that has worked on lightweight electric vertical-takeoff aircraft for more than a decade. It first gained attention with BlackFly, a personal single-seat aircraft with tilt-aircraft architecture delivered to its first customer in June 2023. The founding bet: keep the aircraft light enough and the regulatory wall disappears — a sub-ultralight doesn't need FAA pilot certification.

Helix, revealed in October 2023, was the first Pivotal design meant for volume production. Online sales opened at CES on 8 January 2024: US-only, from $190,000 before taxes, deliveries starting 10 June 2024. The aircraft weighs about 348 pounds, has more than 20 miles of range, charges in about 75 minutes, and the FAA confines it to noncongested areas. Buyers must be at least 18, weigh under 220 pounds, stand at most 6'5", and complete Pivotal's training. COO Kristina Menton told TechCrunch that refundable $250 reservations were already coming in within the first hour of online sales.

By mid-2026 BlackFly had flown more than 10,000 times and in August 2026 was used to respond to an emergency in North Carolina for the first time — Pivotal says it beat an ambulance responding in parallel by 20 minutes. CEO Ken Karklin, in the role for more than four years, left in early September 2026; board member and aviation executive Mike Ross became interim CEO as the fourth-generation Helix heads to market. Pivotal remains one of the companies in the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.
