Pilot

Pilot sells bookkeeping as a service to companies: a human bookkeeper runs each account, powered by Pilot's own software that pulls in financial data, organizes it and produces cleaner books, integrating with services like Expensify and Gusto.

US$15M financing led by Index Ventures, announced 2018-03-14, joined by angels including Patrick and John Collison, Drew Houston, Diane Greene, Frederic Kerrest, Adam D'Angelo and others.

起因

MIT graduates Waseem Daher, Jessica McKellar and Jeff Arnold first worked together on Ksplice, sold to Oracle in 2011. While running their next company they built a continuously-updating internal version of QuickBooks out of frustration with the manual process — and Oracle's finance teams were stunned by it. Their read: double-entry bookkeeping dates to 1400s Venice and is still done today as it was in the 1940s, so the process, not accounting, was the problem. Their chat startup Zulip was sold to Dropbox; afterward the three returned to the bookkeeping idea and started Pilot.

经过

Pilot launched its service in March 2018 with the hybrid model: customers still work with a human bookkeeper, but that bookkeeper uses Pilot's internal tools to import, organize and structure a company's data for more accurate books, integrating with Expensify or Gusto. The same week the company announced US$15M led by Index Ventures with an unusually long angel list — Patrick and John Collison, Drew Houston, Diane Greene, Frederic Kerrest, Adam D'Angelo, Paul English, Howard Lerman, Joshua Reeves and Tien Tzuo. Index's Mike Volpi called it the Uber-style thesis of humans made more effective by software, and co-founder Jessica McKellar said the raise existed to validate a huge hypothesis: automating bookkeeping at scale across a range of industries.

结果

As of 2018-03-14 Pilot was live and rolling out the service, with the funding earmarked to prove the automation-at-scale hypothesis across industries; no later outcome is established in this source.
